The elder who vouches for you
For generations, Tigrayan couples were introduced by a Shmagele: a trusted elder who knew both families, spoke for each person's character, and made sure nobody walked into a marriage blind. Beles keeps that role, and keeps it honest.
How it works on Beles

You name your Shmagele.
During sign-up or from your profile. An aunt, uncle, cousin or family friend who really knows you.

They confirm and write a note.
You send them a private link that lasts 14 days. They open it without creating an account, confirm they know you, and write a few honest words. That note appears on your profile with their name.

They can suggest, if you let them.
When you want their eye on it, you create a 24-hour matchmaker link. It shows them a small deck of people who fit what you're looking for, and they can suggest up to ten with a line about why.

You decide. So does the other person.
A suggestion is only a suggestion. Nothing happens unless you both say kemay, and your Shmagele never messages anyone.
A limited view
First name, age, city, roots, interests, one photo. No bio, no gallery, no messages.
Time-boxed
Vouch links last 14 days, matchmaker links 24 hours. Switch either off any time.
Confirmed, not self-written
A note only counts once the elder writes it themselves. Self-written vouchers are removed.

- What does Shmagele mean?
- ሽማግለ, Shmagele, is the Tigrinya word for an elder. In Tigrayan tradition a Shmagele is the respected person, often an aunt, uncle or family friend, who speaks for your character and helps two families come together.
- Who can be my Shmagele on Beles?
- Anyone who genuinely knows you and is willing to put their name to it. They do not need a Beles account. You send them a private link, they confirm, and they write a short note.
- What does my Shmagele see?
- To vouch for you, nothing but your first name. If you later give them a 24-hour matchmaker link, they see up to ten people a day who fit your preferences: first name, age, city, roots, interests and one photo. Never a bio and never any messages.
- Can my Shmagele match me with someone?
- No. They can suggest, with a note about why. Nothing happens unless you and the other person both say yes. Nobody is told who your Shmagele skipped.
- Can I stop other people's Shmageles from seeing me?
- Yes. There is a switch on your profile. Turn it off and only members can see your card.
